Duration of Massage:

To gain benefits and fully utilize the healing properties of the essential oils the duration of the aromatherapy massage should be at least one hour.

This is the time required for the essential oils to be absorbed into the body through the skin and activate the necessary chemical reactions which lead to healing and the sense of well-being described.

Anything less than an hour will not give the oils sufficient time to enter the body. The massage and strokes used will assist in the body’s absorption of these oils.

Essential Oils: 

Ask your therapist about the oils used during the massage.

You should ensure that the oils used are natural, non-synthetic and organic if you are to receive the expected healing outcomes.

Also check with your therapist if the massage is able to cater to specific health requirements or if it is simply a generic wellbeing massage.

Your therapist should offer a free consultation before the initial massage. During this time your health will be discussed and one or more essential oils are selected based upon your needs.

These are then mixed in with the massage oil or lotion and as well as being absorbed by the body the subtle aroma of the essential oils fills the air around you during the massage and can be absorbed via your respiratory system.

Resting Time: 

All good aromatherapy massages will incorporate resting time at the end. This means an hour long massage should be 80 minutes in length so you have at least 20 minutes resting time after the massage. During the resting time you should drink ample warm or cold water, recline in a lounger or day bed and allow the body to return to its normal state and expel any of the remaining essential oils through your breath, sweat and/or urine.
