Awaken Kundalini 3 easy steps

In this article the 3 step method to awaken Kundalini we will firstly examine what Kundalini energy is and the steps required to ensure a safe and controlled awakening.

Kundalini is derived from ancient Sanskrit and means “the coiled one” and is often shown as a sleeping coiled serpent or goddess  waiting to awaken .  In traditional yogic theory the Kundalini is known as Shakti the primal energy.  The Kundalini is located within Muladhara Chakra at the base of the spine.

Kundalini awakening is practiced to achieve enlightenment and meditative states of bliss, harmony and connection to the supreme being / God / Universe.  There are many different spiritual practices to awaken the Kundalini (meditation, pranayama or controlled breath, Asana ritual or chanting of mantras) however they all focus on the same goals which is awakening the kundalini energy and moving it up through the Sushumna Nadir to reach Sahasrara (the Crown Chakra).

It is said that once Kundalini Awakens you feel the energy moving through Sushumna as though electricity were passing along the spine.

3 Step Method to Awaken Kundalini – How Does The Kundalini Energy Work?

The Kundalini Energy is a component of the “Subtle Body” the bodys’ universal energy containing the chakras and nadis.  Each chakra represents different energies and characteristics and it is believed that by awakening the Kundalini and moving the Kundalini energy through these chakras we become open to these characteristics and can fully develop their positive life and spiritual qualities.

Shakti Kundalini is always described, either in goddess or snake form, as a coiled, sleeping and dormant force with potential to awaken for the spiritual and personal growth of humankind.  The Kundalini is one feature of the Subtle Body (we may refer to this as our Soul). This Subtle Body also contains the Nadis (energy channels or meridians), Chakras (energy centers), Prana ( the subtle energy or subtle winds), and Bindu (drops of essence).

Kundalini is found in Muladhara (The Root Chakra) and this resides at the base of the spine in the triangular shaped sacrum bone.  When depicted Kundalini is coiled, three and a half coils exactly.

Awakening Kundalini opens, balances and purifies the Subtle Body

The Raja Yoga Guru Swami Vivekananda’s description of Kundalini is:

According to the Yogis, there are two nerve currents in the spinal column, called Pingalâ and Idâ, and a hollow canal called Sushumnâ running through the spinal cord. At the lower end of the hollow canal is what the Yogis call the “Lotus of the Kundalini”. They describe it as triangular in form in which, in the symbolical language of the Yogis, there is a power called the Kundalini, coiled up. When that Kundalini awakes, it tries to force a passage through this hollow canal, and as it rises step by step, as it were, layer after layer of the mind becomes open and all the different visions and wonderful powers come to the Yogi. When it reaches the brain, the Yogi is perfectly detached from the body and mind; the soul finds itself free.

We know that the spinal cord is composed in a peculiar manner. If we take the figure eight horizontally (∞) there are two parts which are connected in the middle. Suppose you add eight after eight, piled one on top of the other, that will represent the spinal cord. The left is the Ida, the right Pingala, and that hollow canal which runs through the centre of the spinal cord is the Sushumna. Where the spinal cord ends in some of the lumbar vertebrae, a fine fibre issues downwards, and the canal runs up even within that fibre, only much finer. The canal is closed at the lower end, which is situated near what is called the sacral plexus, which, according to modern physiology, is triangular in form. The different plexuses that have their centres in the spinal canal can very well stand for the different “lotuses” of the Yogi.  * Source Wikipedia

In other beliefs and when the Kundalini is spoken of or portrayed as the Goddess Shakti (or a reincarnation) she rises in the same manner and flowing through the same channels as described by Swami Vivekananda above.  When Shakti Kundalini arrives at the head she unites with the Supreme Being (Lord Shiva).  Once this union occurs a state of deep intense meditation is entered and infinite bliss achieved.

The Bhagavad Gita states:

At the command of the yogi in deep meditation, this creative force turns inward and flows back to its source in the thousand-petaled lotus, revealing the resplendent inner world of the divine forces and consciousness of the soul and Spirit. Yoga refers to this power flowing from the coccyx to Spirit as the awakened Kundalini.

3 Step Method To Awaken Kundalini – The Process

The awakening of Kundalini is a very powerful process.  This 3 Step Method to awaken Kundalini is based on teachings from Kriya Yoga.

There are many examples and practices for awakening Shakti Kundalini from her sleep however all are based on the same process of moving the Kundalini energy to unite with Divine at Sahasrara.  The techniques may vary but the intention is the same.

The intention of awakening Kundalini is to achieve spiritual enlightenment however due to the increase in pure energy and the opening and balancing of the chakras your health and well-being will be enhanced and improve.  It is stated that awakening Kundalini removes all stress, anxiety and unhappiness from your life.

This Kriya Yoga Technique – 3 Step Method to Awaken Kundalini –  is  a purification technique and largely recognized as the easiest and safest method to enter the meditative state of bliss.

This technique initially purifies your energy channels and centers which in turn allows Shakti Kundalini to move through unrestricted.

Step 1 – 3 Step Method To Awaken Kundalini.

This Step involves the process of Controlled Breath.

To begin you need to focus your thoughts on your breath.  As you breathe in focus and see/feel your breath move from Muladhara (Root Chakra) at the base of the spine, moving up following your spine and then finally exiting out the top of your head.  As you inhale it should be as though you are inhaling your breath up your spine and essentially inhaling pure energy.

Don’t worry if you can’t visualize this process.  This is not about visualization is it about focus and control.  Focus on your breath.  Focus on your breath rising from the base of your spine and moving up the spine and then exiting the top of your head.

How Can I And Why Do I Need To Focus My Breath? – (Step 1)

You simply need to feel your breath.  Feel that as you inhale your breath is rising from Muladhara, feel your breath rise up through your spine and exit the top of your head.

Make sure you are relaxed.  You do not need to see or visualize.  Concentrate but do not force anything.  Just relax and as you breath in focus on your breath.  Focus on it gently rising.  This focus on your breath is a gentle and powerful suggestion to the energy to move in the direction you are focused on.  Focusing on your breath is a suggestion to Kundalini energy to move in the direction required.  Do not force the breath/energy.  Allow Kundalini to move on it’s own without force.

Simply relax and on a slow, deep breath in focus on just your breath beginning at Muladhara, moving up your spine and then out the top of your head.

As you practice this technique of focused breath inhalation you will be able to feel the energy rising within you.  These sensations, while subtle to begin with, will become stronger and after some time are often described as being like a hot rush of “pure bliss” up your spine.

This rush of hot bliss is said to be a similar sensation to orgasm hence the association of Kundalini with Tantric practices.

Step 2 – 3 Step Method to Awaken Kundalini. awaken kundalini 3 easy steps

Step 2 is to now focus on exhalation and to focus our breath moving down the Chakra centers.

As you breathe out focus on your breath.  Move your breath from Sahasrara (Crown Chakra – top of the head) to Ajna (Third Eye Chakra – between the eyebrows) then to Vishuddha and then finally to Anahata (Heart Chakra – in the center of the chest).

Once your breath has reached your heart chakra stop.  Then focus on inhaling again from the base of the spine (as in step 1).  Repeat this process.  Focus inhalation from the base of the spine, up the spine and out the top of the head,  Exhalation focus the breath moving from Sahasrara to Ajna to Vishuddha and finally to Anahata.

Step 3 – 3 Step Method To Awaken Kundalini.

Step 1 and 2 are purification of your subtle body and Nadi.  The third step is actual awakening of the Kundalini energy.

In normal circumstances the teacher of this process would not begin step 3 until satisfied you have purified (Steps 1 and 2) and would normally perform Step 3 by initiation.  The initiation is where your teacher or Guru gives you Shaktipat.  Shaktipat awakens Kundalini and is done by a touch, or chanting or focusing their energy upon you.

You are able to awaken Kundalini yourself.  It is a necessary and important step and must be done.  However it is also easy.

To gain Shaktipat you must silently repeat the name of a Guru, Teacher or Saint whom you feel connected to or who you admire. It is of no relevance to have met this person in the physical. What is important is that the person you chose is someone enlightened and that you have admiration for.

This person can be a Guru or Swami, a teacher already initiated by Shaktipat or a Saint from other religions.  Shaktipat is delivered and Kundalini awakened regardless of Guru, Saint or Teacher status as it is the intention and focus that brings Shaktipat and the awakening. This is similar to the Reiki belief of distance healing and Attunements – the importance is the focused intent.

It is also possible, should you feel uncomfortable with choosing a Guru or Saint for you to substitute “Peace” in place of the name.  This practice has gained in popularity however in my experience this takes longer to awaken Kundalini.  I believe that if we wish to awaken Kundalini and we accept the existence of Kundalini energy we should also also accept the established and proven methodologies for the awakening.

Initiate Shaktipat – 3 Step Method To Awaken Kundalini.

To initiate Shaktipat silently say the name of your chosen person as you inhale, then repeat their name as you exhale.  This repetition of the name is based on the belief that you will take the Shakti (energy) of whatever you focus on.  By repeating the name you, in essence, take on their enlightenment, energy and state of bliss.

While this may sound simple it is a process and technique that has been used for centuries because of its effectiveness.

By focusing on your Guru, Saint or Teacher you are awakening the Shakti Kundalini inside you. it has nothing to do with them, or their personality or their physical body.  You are gaining Shaktipat by focusing on the energy that is already awakened within them, by focusing on an awakened person you are actually focusing on what it is you wish to awakened – the Kundalini. Their awakened energy radiates from them and as such when focused upon awakens the energy within you.

3 Step Method To Awaken Kundalini Practice.

Now you are aware of the Awaken Kundalini 3 Easy Steps process you can build a regular practice into your daily regime.

Once comfortable with each step you combine them to form a regime of Kundalini awakening.

On inhalation silently say your Guru’s name while focusing on your breath moving from the base of your spine, up your spine and out the top of your head.

On exhalation silently say your Guru’s name while focusing on your breath moving from Sahasrara to Ajna to Vishuddha to Anahata.

And then repeat.
